When I hear the word "democracy" I think of voting and everybody's opinion and thought counting. I think about when the people of a certain group could only elect who was president, king, etc.
I personally like democracy, compared to the old way of being elected, because there are more votes, therefore an all over better result of who the majority wants to win. Democracy shows the people of the area that they can have a say in who runs their community, province, etc. I think people who can vote feel more powerful, important and acknowledged.
I think that this celebration "Democracy 250" should've been recognized more than just in schools and certain grades, it should've been posted and talked about all over. People everywhere should be realizing and acknowledging the greatness of democracy. Most people today don't know what it was like and how lucky they are now.
I feel it is important that we celebrate democracy, like the way we celebrate freedom on Remembrance Day. The people are free to express themselves now and vote for who they think should win, not just sit around and hope the person who they h will win. We now have more choices and chances to be ourselves, think for ourselves and to do for ourselves.
Before this essay I never understood what democracy was. I now know what democracy is, means and its importance in life. that's why above I said it should be talked about in other places, because for sure there are more people than just me who don't know or care about voting, politics or democracy. I'm fourteen and it doesn't matter must to me because I can't vote right now. When I turn eighteen it will be good to know about the history and the importance of voting, so I don't just pick randomly or not vote at all. Now that I understand the history behind democracy I can honestly vote for the person I feel should be elected.
