Name: Sarah Mitchell
Description: In 1758 democracy in Canada was established. Nova Scotia was the first province to have a democratic government system.
Democracy changed the lives of all Canadians. Having a democratic government enabled Canadians to choose their leader instead of having it chosen for them. This gave them freedom to express their opinions without being punished.
We Canadians are very privileged to be able o vote in our own government. In China they have a communist government - the people have no say in who represents their country.
Canada has come a long way since 1758. Women and African Canadians are now able to vote. At the beginning, and many years after Canada became a country (1867), white men over the age of 18 were the only people able to vote.
When voting first started in Canada it was an open vote, meaning you stood up on a stage and told everyone who you were voting for. As the years went on private voting came into effect, due to violence among the opinions of different people. Now you can even vote online.
Nova Scotians should be very proud to be celebrating the 250th year of democracy in Canada. It is a privilege to be recognized as the province that started democracy in Canada.
