Mount Uniacke Hotel
Built in 1859 by Richard McLearn. Destroyed by fire in 1937. Year photo taken is unknown. Look closely and you can read the sign on the front of the hotel. Some people knew it as the Parker Hotel.

Hello from Windsor District RCMP.  It’s nice to see warmer weather coming our way.  Time to get ready for spring cleaning and prepare for the summer months once again.  Unfortunately, with the warmer weather comes familiar problems on our roads and highways, like squealing of tires, speeding and other types of offenses.

One subject comes to mind.  The throwing of objects out a vehicle or at a vehicle.  Not only is this illegal but very dangerous as well.  Section 173 (1) of the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act states if you throw an object at a vehicle you can be charged and face a fine of $394.50.  But, if someone is injured as a result, the offender could be looking at a more serious offence under the Criminal Code of Canada.  As well, we all heard of the new laws that came into effect on April 1st pertaining to the use of cell phones and smoking in vehicles.  According to Section 100 D (1) of the Motor Vehicle Act, using hand-held cellular telephone or text messaging on a communication device while operating a vehicle on any roadway can result in a fine of $164.50 for the first offence only.  Also, if you are smoking ina  motor vehicle when any person under the age of 19 is present in the vehicle a fine of $394.50 can result according to Section 5 (2A) of the Smoke Free Places Act.  I don’t know about you but that is one expensive smoke!  Another issue, probably one of the most important, is the passing of school busses when they have their lights activated.  It’s always a good practice to stop when you see a school bus with the amber lights activated.  It’s the law to stop when the red lights are activated.  These young citizens represent the future of our communities and we all must keep them as safe as possible.  If you see a vehicle pass a stopped school bus with red lights activated, my friends at the detachment would really like to know.  A call to either 866-7267 or 798-2207 will reach the detachment.   A description of the offending vehicle and licence plate would be valuable information to obtain.  As I have said in the past, we all have to work together to make our communities safer fo rourselves and our children. Please have a great spring and be safe.  See you next time.                                         Cst. George Cameron, Community Policing
