THANK YOU - Uniacke and District Br #165, on behalf of its members and the community, would like to express its thanks to the Municipality of East Hants, Warden John Patterson and Councilor Rosanne Bland for their assistance in assisting the branch in receiving a grant for the installation of a new air conditioning unit for the downstairs community hall.

Honours & Awards: Our annual Honours and Awards night was held on June 13. Guests for the evening were Chairman of Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command, Steve Wessell, Deputy Zone Commander for Zone 15, Bob Evans and his wife Sheila, Warden John Patterson and his wife, Councillor Rosanne Bland and guest, Fire Chief Todd Swinamer and his wife, MLA John McDonell and his wife Leslie, and representatives from Sackville, Bedford and Waverley Legions.

 

The evening started with a wine & cheese reception followed by a dinner catered by Wise Choice Catering followed by  the awards presentations.

 

The following is a list of award recipients:

Certificates of Merit (for outstanding volunteerism): Judy Brundage and Rita Harroun for over 20 years with the Bingo committee, Sis Clarke, Diane Fahie and Anne Sangster for over 15 years with Bingo, Helen Oakley for over 10 years with Bingo and Judy Yetman for her continued service to the Branch and especially to the bar and its patrons.

 

Years of service pins (for continuous years of membership to the Legion): Judy Brundage, Jim Kennickell, Wayne Cooke and Bernie Sarson (all 25 years), Joanne Alpaugh, Diane Fahie, Homer Garrison, Mabel McCarthy, Terry Parsons, Michel Spioneck, Ron Barnaby, Bev Garrison, Janet Mailman, Francis Nicoll and Alvina Ritchie (all 20 years).

 

Medals & Bars to Past Officers: Howard Clarke (2nd Vice Medal & Bar), Wanda Young (Service Officers Medal & Bar), and Joan Hayden (Past Officer Medal & Executive Committee Bar).

 

We were pleased to present the Royal Canadian Legion Friendship Award which is given to individuals or organizations who have provided assistance, service or co-operation to the Legion and to the community to Eddy’s Variety and its owner, Edmond Chater.

 

President’s Award (presented by the President to an executive member for their dedication to the Branch and their tireless work for all its members): Anne Sangster

 

Legionnaire of the Year (presented by Nina MacDonnel on behalf of her family and in memory of her husband Jack to a legionnaire who helps promote the Poppy Campaign, Legion welfare and Veterans’ service):   Eric & Arlene Bent

 

Life Membership (given to a Legion member who has made significant contributions of time, effort and dedication to the Branch welfare and ideals over a long period of time): Mabel McCarthy & Bill Yetman

 

President Mabel McCarthy was presented with a plaque by Fire Chief, Todd Swinamer on behalf of the Uniacke & District Volunteer Fire Department in recognition of our 25th Anniversary.

 

President Mabel & Bingo Chairperson, Joan Hayden presented Barb Laymen and Delores Broussard, representing the school breakfast program, a cheque for $1,100.00 for this worthwhile cause.

 

The evening was a huge success and it was followed by a dance in our Memorabilia Lounge.

 

On this, our 25th Anniversary, we wish to thank all those, past and present, who have worked tirelessly for our Veterans, members and the community.
