“Points
to Ponder with Const Harris”
Hi! I would like to speak on a very important
progam called the “Hug-A-Tree Program”.
This is a program which teaches children what they should do if they
ever get lost in the woods or in unfamiliar territory. The main points of this program are:
1. Always tell someone where you are going so
that if you get lost searchers will know where to begin their search once
contacted by family members.
2. Always carry a garbage bag and whistle with
you. These two items are easy to carry
and can save your life. If you become
lost in the woods you can make a hole in the top of the garbage bag and pull it
over your head. This will keep you warm
and dry. An orange coloured garbage bag
makes it easier to be seen in the woods by searchers. The noise from a whistle will carry further
than your voice and uses less energy.
3. When you become lost do not panic. Remain near a tree and, if possible, near a
clearing. By staying in one place you
will be found far more quickly by searchers and you won’t be injured trying to
find your way out.
4. Help searchers find you by listening for
their noises and responding with your whistle.
This is a really
good program and if anyone requires more information please contact me or the
West Hants Ground Search and Rescue Team.
