TO THE RESIDENTS OF MOUNT UNIACKE

Well, spring is here and with it comes the break-up of the gravel roads throughout the province.  There are many, many people adding their voices to support the rebuilding of some of these roads and maintenance that is above and beyond the “normal spring grading process”.  The roads in this community have been allowed to fall into disrepair that is not the “normal” wear and tear of gravel roads but rather several years of “true” maintenance neglect.  DOT has done the best they could do with the resources made available to them by previous governments but it was NOT enough.  There have been reports of cars breaking axles, losing their rear ends, sinking into the roads, etc.

Three gravel roads in this community requiring rebuilding and above-normal maintenance are Lakecrest Drive, Beamish Road, Uniacke Mines Road.  DOT has already carried out emergency repairs/maintenance on these roads because they either collapsed, are so full of pot holes that they are dangerous to drive on or they turned to mushy slime in the early spring.  We have been told this is “normal spring break-up” but the residents of these roads know that it goes beyond the “norm” for spring break-up.  These roads are in need of proper rebuilding.  Band aid solutions are no longer fixing the problem.  Just as the East Uniacke Road required rebuilding for many years (and it was finally done in 2005 although not all the way out to the Beaverbank Road as suggested and required) and this community had to fight to have it done for safety’s sake, so too do these three gravel roads.  We ask everyone/anyone who must travel on these three roads, and any others in this community, to contact DOT and our MLA, John MacDonell with your request.  At some time, everyone will travel these roads to see something and it would be safer if the roads did not fall into “nowhere”.

Thanks for your support.                                               Concerned Residents
