HOW
TO AVOID PHONE AND
E-MAIL
SCAMS
Recently, there have been reports in Hants County
where “scam artists” are trying to get money from people over the telephone or
the internet.
Here are a few tips to remember:
* Check out
your caller’s firm through Access Nova Scotia at 1-800-670-4357. You can also search businesses and charities
at www.gov.ns.ca/snsmr/rjsc
or call at 1-877-277-7727.
* Never give
personal information like username/password combinations or credit card
information by e-mail. Don’t follow
links contained in suspect e-mails.
* Don’t
press your keypad if you are told to do so.
It can be a way for scammers to make long distance calls on your line at
your expense.
* Don’t
believe sincere-sounding requests for money by callers who say a relative has
passed away or is in jail and needs bail money
